the Gospel
John 17:20-26
Lifting up his eyes to heaven, Jesus prayed saying:
“Holy Father, I pray not only for them,
but also for those who will believe in me through their word,
so that they may all be one,
as you, Father, are in me and I in you,
that they also may be in us,
that the world may believe that you sent me.
And I have given them the glory you gave me,
so that they may be one, as we are one,
I in them and you in me,
that they may be brought to perfection as one,
that the world may know that you sent me,
and that you loved them even as you loved me.
Father, they are your gift to me.
I wish that where I am they also may be with me,
that they may see my glory that you gave me,
because you loved me before the foundation of the world.
Righteous Father, the world also does not know you,
but I know you, and they know that you sent me.
I made known to them your name and I will make it known,
that the love with which you loved me
may be in them and I in them.”
the devotion
How I desire that we all be one, and how painful it is that we are not. In my family, I often feel very alone in practicing my faith - the most important facet of my life. Bubbling with excitement, I want them to know Jesus and how they can encounter Him powerfully in the Sacraments He established. How much He loves them and wants intimacy with them. I want to share the beautiful teachings/traditions of the Catholic Church and the Sacred Scriptures which when combined give the blueprint for living a meaningful, joy-filled life.
Jesus is alive! I can’t live my life pretending this isn’t true. My enthusiasm is met with eye rolls, mocking, blank stares, genuine disinterest, and sometimes outright rebellion - criticizing all the things that I treasure and hold dear.
Yet, I know that I don’t walk entirely alone. Jesus is always with me, becoming one with me in the Eucharist. Blessed Mother Mary, Joseph, and all the angels and saints guide me from heaven, and the Women at the Well encourage and sustain me on earth. We are all one, united with Christ in faith and love.
I continue to pray for my family in confidence and trust. I surrender to Him with hope that one day He will fulfill the deepest yearning of my heart - that where I am they also may be. “Complete my joy by being of the same mind, with the same love, united in heart, thinking one thing.” Phil 2:2
